Genetic Causes of CP iConsent Step 1

Questions & Answers

Will the study team provide my results to me?

  • As you sign up for the study, you will be asked if you wish to receive results for the person with CP. This is OPTIONAL.
  • If you select “Yes,” we will send you a formal letter explaining the findings*. There are three main possibilities:
    • We may find an apparent explanation for your CP (positive findings).
    • We may find no clear explanation for your CP (negative findings).
    • It is also possible we may find a genetic change that may or may not be related to your CP (variant of uncertain significance).
  • Your results letter will be marked “Research Only.” If you wish to have your results included in your medical record, these will need to be confirmed in a clinical (CLIA-certified) lab.
  • It is important to recognize that research is different than clinical testing because research includes not only identifying known genetic causes of disease, but also seeks to discover new causes of CP.
  • Research takes time, and results cannot be guaranteed within a specific time frame.  Participation in this study is not the same as “free testing”.
*We will make every effort to respect your wishes.  However the study team reserves the ultimate right to determine if any study-related findings should or should not be shared with you, as exceptional circumstances do occur.
